  1. AFM2TFM converts Adobe font metrics (AFM files) to TeX font metrics
  2. (TFM files).

  4. PostScript fonts are often accompanied by .afm files.  For example,
  5. Times-Roman.afm describes the characteristics of the Times-Roman
  6. font.  To use such a font with TeX, we need a TFM file containing
  7. similar information.  AFM2TFM does the necessary conversion.

  9. AFM2TFM is normally part of the DVIPS distribution, but it seemed
  10. more sensible to include it with the other font related tools in
  11. OzMF.  For all the details about the various options in AFM2TFM,
  12. print out the DVIPS manual (run TeX on :DVIPS:Docs:dvips.tex).

  14. AFM2TFM was written by Tomas Rokicki and Donald Knuth.

  16. NB: An alternative method of creating TFMs from AFMs is to use
  17. Alan Jeffrey's fontinst package (available by ftp from CTAN sites).
  18. This is a TeX macro package, so it is a lot slower than AFM2TFM.
  19. However, fontinst is more flexible and very convenient for creating
  20. all the supporting files required by LaTeX's PSNFSS package.
